Our Southeast Forestry Program secured a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwf.org\/Home\/Latest-News\/Press-Releases\/2024\/8-28-24-Southeast-Forestry\">$2 million grant<\/a> from the U.S. Forest Service, used in part to support the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nwf.org\/2024\/04\/longleaf-for-alls-prescribed-fire-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Longleaf for All<\/a>\u201d Landowner Mentorship program, which empowers historically underserved landowners to sustainably manage forested land and have access to emerging climate-smart markets. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwf.org\/Magazines\/National-Wildlife\/2023\/Spring\/Conservation\/Community-Connection\">Mr. Herbert Hodges<\/a>, the first mentor in the program, is being recognized as the 2024 Conservationist of the Year by Georgia Association of Conservation Districts and the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s Natural Resources Conservation Service.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p  class=\"appear-on-scroll has-small-font-size\" ><em>Photo Credit: Tiffany Woods<\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div   class=\"theme-block is-style-full-width appear-on-scroll wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile has-pattern-highlight is-style-square\"  ><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\"><h2  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-heading\" ><span class=\"text\">In Galveston, Nature-Based Solutions Offer Hope Amid Climate Risk<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">Residents of the low-lying Galveston barrier island in Texas are increasingly vulnerable to accelerating sea level rise and extreme weather events. NWF created a <a href=\"https:\/\/texaslivingwaters.org\/climate-resilient-galveston-report-shows-the-value-of-nature-based-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comprehensive report<\/a> revealing the latest projections on climate change-related risks &#8211; including their socio-economic and environmental impacts \u2013 and identifying potential adaptation strategies. The <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nwf.org\/2024\/09\/ecoschools-u-s-goes-back-to-school-celebrating-success\/\">EcoSchools<\/a> program involved thousands of students who developed leadership skills and participated in learning experiences centered around wildlife, water, and energy projects. These efforts expanded wildlife habitat by over 400,000 square feet and allowed students to support the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">Our <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nwf.org\/2024\/08\/ecogreen-stories-on-habitat-restoration-to-school-wide-composting-and-green-careers\/\">EcoGreen program<\/a> works mainly in Michigan and Ohio to pair educators, students, and parents with mentors from General Motors to develop sustainability programs.
