The suit argued that the Endangered Species Act prohibits harm to the \u02bbua\u02bbu, unless the property owner secures a federal permit that includes measures to minimize danger and to help protect nesting colonies.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">Under a settlement reached in August, Grand Wailea will obtain the federal permit. Until then, it will contribute monthly to projects benefiting \u02bbua\u02bbu in Maui County. The resort will also reduce the brightness and intensity of its outdoor lighting and will step up efforts to search for downed birds on its property.<\/p>\n\n<p  class=\"appear-on-scroll has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" ><em>Photo Credit: Brett Nainoa Mossman<\/em><\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div   class=\"theme-block is-style-full-width appear-on-scroll wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile has-pattern-highlight is-style-square\"  ><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\"><h2  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-heading\" ><span class=\"text\"><strong>Sea Turtle Hatchlings Gain Protection Under Lighting Ordinances<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">Brightly lit beaches and parking lots pose risks both to nesting sea turtles and their&nbsp;hatchlings, who are instinctually compelled towards light sources. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nwf.org\/2023\/05\/can-turning-off-the-lights-save-a-sea-turtle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sea Turtle Lighting&nbsp;Ordinances<\/a> in Florida focus on reducing human light pollution seasonally along the state\u2019s nesting beaches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">NWF, in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/conserveturtles.org\/beachfront-lighting-turtle-friendly-fixtures-lights\/\">Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC)<\/a>, has engaged in a multi-year campaign to ensure sea turtle hatchlings have a fighting chance. In the last year, we have had <a href=\"https:\/\/conserveturtles.org\/legislative-session-brings-positive-outcomes-for-sea-turtles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two major successes in passing<\/a> model ordinances in Escambia and&nbsp;Monroe counties.
